Are you looking for a costume that is pretty neutral yet still fun and funny? Well, you might just want to consider going to your next Halloween party or costume shindig in a peanut costume!
The peanut is one of the most widely consumed foods, being found on shelves and in markets all over the world. The peanut, also known by many other names, is native to India, Pakistan, some parts of Africa, South America, and Central America. The role of European explorers was invaluable in spreading the use and cultivation of these plants. Most notably, they brought this healthful, tasty food back with them to Europe and also into China, which has become the world’s largest producer of peanuts today.
Peanuts are used in many products. They can be eaten boiled, fried, roasted, or incorporated into various pastes, sauces, and pastries. Some of the major cuisines t
hat use peanuts are the Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, and Peruvian cuisines, as well as in sweets enjoyed across the West.

What you may not know is that peanuts are also used in many industrial processes. For example, paints and varnishes are made from peanuts. So are lubricating oils, polishing waxes and oils, insecticides, animal feeds, and nitroglycerin. Some soaps also have their roots in the humble peanut. Even the shell is useful – what we usually throw away can actually be used in the production of plastics, wallboards, cellulose, paper, and abrasives.
Truly the peanut is an underappreciated food. Its characteristic appearance is also pretty striking if you think about it. How many other foods do you know have a grid-like pattern across their surface? In fact, the pod of the peanut is iconic and immediately recognizable.
As a source of inspiration for costumes, peanuts do lend their characteristic appearance. Most costumes based on peanuts have the wearer dressed up in the outer shell of the peanut. Normally the appearance is achieved using prints, but you can find better costumes with raised ridges, just like the ridged texture of a real peanut.
Here’s another idea: have separate pieces for the shell and the inside nuts, kind of like a peas and pod concept. A great way to put this to practice is for toddlers. Have them dress up in a costume like this, and you can take off the “shell” if they are feeling a bit warm, just like a real peanut!

One of the more recognizable images of a peanut is the mascot of the Planters brand, the aptly named Mister Peanut. Mister Peanut is a peanut with black arms and legs, a face, and the general appearance of a gentleman. In fact, he wears white gloves, spats, a monocle, and a top hat with his name on it. He even carries a cane! Go to party in a costume like this, and you can be sure that everyone will notice you.
Though it is kind of tangential, you might also want to look for costumes based on the characters from the Peanuts comic strip. The series is considered to be one of the most influential in the entirety of the art form, having been on the scene since 1950. It has reached 75 countries and has been translated into 21 languages. In the end, it is the characters that made it outstanding. There’s Charlie Brown in his accented yellow shirt, the stubborn but unconfident boy. There’s everyone’s favorite beagle, Snoopy who is arguably more human than animal. Of course, there’s the entire gang of friends too – Lucy the cynical girl, Linus the blanket-toting wise-boy, and many more!
